WELCOME TO MMA DEFENCE

If you are thinking of learning self-defence in Liverpool, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) blends the best parts of different martial art disciplines into one curriculum to create our advanced self-defence training program. You will be taught by our team of 23 instructors who all have different backgrounds and specialisms.

We’re offering an exclusive free self-defence course tailored for university students and staff. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to enhance your skills, this program is designed to boost your confidence, awareness, and safety in everyday situations. We passionately feel that self-defence is a life skill that everyone should know. We also work in partnership with the Liverpool based Universities to provide free month-long self-defence courses, in the evenings and at weekends, for students and staff to attend.

The next monthly courses are running in October 2025, with 22 sessions each month!

We have a maximum capacity for 30 participants for each month. If more than that want to attend then we will add them into the following month’s course.

The courses will be run at;

  • Holly Lodge Academy, 140 Mill Lane, West Derby, L12 7LE
  • Woolton High School, Woolton Hill Road, Woolton, L25 6JA

They are from 7pm till 8pm Monday through to Thursday. And also on a Saturday morning from 11am till 12:15pm.

No equipment or special clothing is needed. All the month long sessions will be free of charge.

WHERE AND WHEN are the courses?
What do you teach?

We cover a wide variety of topics including;

  • How to be safe in your daily life
  • How to identify and assess a threat
  • Use of body language and noise to avoid escalation
  • How to maintain a safe distance
  • How to escape and evade a confrontation
  • How to de-escalate a situation
  • Defensive stances
  • How to defend against attacks
  • Escape holds, throat grabs, headlocks, pins, hair grabs, bear hugs, etc.
  • How to strike
  • How to stop someone who is trying to take you somewhere you don’t want to go
  • How to stop someone who is trying to make you do something you don’t want to do
  • General self-defence techniques
  • What constitutes reasonable force

The courses are free for all University students and staff.

Our courses are suitable for all ages and abilities. We provide all the equipment and teach simple and effective techniques that can be used, and remembered, by everyone. Technique is more important than size or strength.

We structure the course to provide self defence training in a safe and fun environment. All of our trainers are experts in their field and deliver a friendly and welcoming experience. They are all first aid trained, fully insured, and DBS checked.
